Day 353 · Dec 18

The Birthday of Joseph Grimaldi (1778) – Mathematics of Clowning

Grimaldi invented the modern clown. Clowning uses slapstick – which is physics (projectile motion, collisions). The timing of a joke is a mathematical interval. The ‘pie in the face’ is a parabolic trajectory. Clown makeup uses symmetry (or deliberate asymmetry). Clowns also study probability: the chance a gag will get a laugh. Mathematics even underlies the comedic ‘rule of three’. Grimaldi’s legacy shows that even joy follows equations – but we laugh despite, not because, of the math.

What is the ‘rule of three’ in comedy? Three repetitions of a setup, with the third subverting expectation – a pattern in probability (low probability event).
