Day 4 · Jan 4

Newton's Annus Mirabilis

Isaac Newton was born on January 4, 1643 by the Gregorian calendar. During 1665–1666, while Cambridge was closed due to plague, he worked alone at his family farm and invented calculus, discovered the spectrum of light, and derived the law of universal gravitation — arguably the most productive two years in the history of science. He later said of that period: 'I was in the prime of my age for invention and minded mathematics and philosophy more than at any time since.'

Newton invented calculus to solve physics problems. Can you think of a simple motion problem that cannot be solved without it?
