Day 179 · Jun 27
179 is prime, and 181 is prime — making (179, 181) a twin prime pair, primes separated by exactly 2. The gap between 173 and 179 is 6; the next prime after 181 is 191, a gap of 10. Prime gaps are unpredictable, yet their average is governed by the Prime Number Theorem: near N, the average gap is approximately ln(N). Near 179, that is about ln(179) ≈ 5.2. The actual gaps of 6 and 10 are within normal variation. In 2013, Yitang Zhang proved there are infinitely many prime pairs separated by less than 70 million — a sudden breakthrough after decades of silence on twin primes.
