Day 89 · Mar 29

The Fibonacci Prime 89

89 is both a prime number and a Fibonacci number — the 11th Fibonacci number. It is also the 24th prime. More remarkably: 1/89 = 0.01123595505617977528… and the decimal expansion of 1/89 encodes the Fibonacci sequence: the digits are formed by the successive sums 0.01, 0.001, 0.0002, 0.00003, 0.000005, 0.0000008, 0.00000013, … — the Fibonacci numbers as decimal shifts, summed to give exactly 1/89. This astonishing coincidence — or deep truth — connecting two entirely different corners of mathematics has no simple explanation.

Why is 89 particularly special among two-digit numbers? Can you verify that 1/89 begins 0.01123595…?
