Day 325 · Nov 20

Transgender Day of Remembrance – Mathematics of Gender Diversity

This day honours trans people killed by violence. Mathematics can help: census data (statistics of undercounting), health outcomes (epidemiological models), and discrimination studies (regression analysis). The ‘invisible’ population can be estimated using capture‑recapture methods (like estimating fish population). Mathematical models show that inclusive policies reduce suicide risk (odds ratio). Mathematics is not neutral – it can be used to harm (e.g., algorithmic bias) or to help (data for advocacy). Numbers can give voice to the marginalised.

What is ‘capture‑recapture’? If you mark a sample of a population, then later sample again, the proportion of marked individuals in the second sample estimates total population size.
