Day 285 · Oct 11

The International Day of the Girl Child – Mathematics and Gender

Girls around the world face barriers to studying mathematics. Research shows that stereotypes, lack of role models, and implicit bias affect performance. Mathematics is not inherently gendered – yet the gender gap persists. Initiatives like ‘Girls Who Code’ and ‘Mathematical Olympiad for Girls’ aim to close it. The mathematics of gender equity uses statistics to measure disparities, network theory to amplify role models, and optimisation to design interventions. Every girl who loves math deserves a chance to pursue it.

What is ‘stereotype threat’? When a negative stereotype about a group (e.g., ‘girls are bad at math’) causes individuals to perform worse due to anxiety. How can it be mitigated?
