Day 298 · Oct 24

United Nations Day – Mathematics of Global Governance

The UN was founded on 24 October 1945. Its mathematics includes: voting power (Shapley‑Shubik index, Banzhaf power index), resource allocation (WHO budget, peacekeeping contributions), and goal setting (Sustainable Development Goals – measured by indicators, statistical modelling). The ‘UN Charter’ is a legal document, but its implementation requires mathematics: from climate models to refugee camp design. The UN’s work is a global optimisation problem – how to maximise human welfare with limited resources. Mathematics is the silent partner in diplomacy.

What is the ‘Shapley value’? A method to fairly distribute payoffs among coalition members based on their marginal contributions. It is used in the UN to determine voting power.
