Day 302 · Oct 28

The Mathematics of the Fireworks – The Calvin and Hobbes Story

In a famous Calvin and Hobbes strip, Calvin launches a firework that spells ‘MATHEMATICS’ – then says, ‘It says mathematics because it explodes into a thousand numbers.’ Fireworks displays are choreographed using timing sequences (arithmetic progression of ignitions), projectile motion (parabolas), and colour (emission spectra – quantum mechanics). The ‘thousand numbers’ could be random digits, but true randomness is hard to generate. Fireworks combine physics, chemistry, and mathematics in a beautiful display. A perfect day for celebrating math’s explosive beauty.

How do fireworks get their colours? Strontium (red), barium (green), copper (blue), sodium (yellow) – each emits light at specific wavelengths determined by quantum energy levels.
