World Teachers’ Day – The Mathematics of Teaching

October 5 is World Teachers’ Day. Mathematics teachers face the challenge of making abstract concepts concrete, motivating students, and assessing understanding. The mathematics of education includes: learning curves (how retention decays), test theory (item response models), and optimisation (classroom scheduling). Effective teaching uses the mathematics of communication (information theory) and psychology (operant conditioning). Teachers are the engineers of human knowledge – and mathematics is their tool.
